Comreg.ie - The Internet and Broadband Experience for Business Users
The latest report by Comreg.ie makes for some interesting reading and in some ways highlights the current economic climate in Ireland.
My personal experience of broadband in Ireland has not been good. I lived firstly in Maynooth and it took Eircom six weeks to connect my telephone line, then two weeks to switch on the broadband. Now I am in Dublin city centre and it took them only a week to connect the telephone line - but another two months to provide me with broadband - and that was with many calls to continually chase it up - a very frustrating experience.
In this report it is stated that 90% of Irish businesses are connected to the internet however only 69% of this 90% have broadband access. I find it quite amazing that any company should still be resorting to dial-up access, given that it ties up the telephone line and the very slow access speed.
There are two other major topics in this report of interest to me. Voip - the low amount of Irish businesses using this type of service - to that end I will write about it here soon. A 101 on voip.
The last part of interest is the fact that Irish businesses at the moment do not care much about the cost of these services - it is as they state “let’s get it working and keep it that way for now.” I also install some web sites in the UK and because of this have a little knowledge of the market there. the competition is fierce in this area with the choice of many providers. I look forward to the same happening here during the next few years.
